Another strong set of results from Monkton pupils

This year saw Monkton pupils achieve another strong set of A Level grades with nearly three quarters of grades at A*-B as well as continuing the trend that has seen pupils achieve nearly 1 in 5 grades at A* over the last three years. The average UCAS score per pupil was 144 points which is equivalent to 3 A grades at A Level.
With one pupil achieving 4 A* grades at A Level (going on as a choral scholar to Girton College Cambridge to study Natural Sciences) and a significant number achieving the top grade in 2 or 3 subjects, Principal Chris Wheeler commented, "With so much focus on the Gove-ian knowledge heavy curriculum reforms, it is great to see Monkton pupils continue to achieve results that place them amongst the very top pupils in the country and demonstrate that academic excellence can be achieved through self knowledge as much as through rote learning. 'Just as important, are the battles fought and won by those pupils who find their studies challenging, or the brilliant results secured in the creative arts where the Gradgrindian focus on exams is, thankfully, less pivotal."
The significant success Monkton has achieved at the top Art Colleges continued this year, including two pupils gaining highly sought-after places at Central St Martin’s. Deputy Head, Joe Sidders, observed, "It is wonderful to see pupils achieving such outstanding accolades in their artistic ambitions, especially when the last two years have also seen pupils securing starred distinctions (the highest possible grade) in Music Technology BTEC".
Monkton does not publish its results to national league tables but was listed 11th in West Country Schools in last year’s Parent Power results in The Times.
Of those pupils who have confirmed places at university, over 90% are going to universities they chose, with over half of these in the elite Russell Group. Seven students have successfully secured places at Exeter University, five at Bristol and three at both Durham and Loughborough.
