Monkton Students Celebrate Outstanding GCSE results and HPQ success
This year’s cohort attained top grades across a wide range of subjects with an impressive 74% of students recording 9-6 grades and 100% of HPQs being graded at A*.
Among the many successes, particular mention goes to one of Monkton’s top achievers Toby J. Toby is a military boarder who joined Monkton Prep in Year 6 and received grade 9 in all eleven of his GCSE subjects. His HPQ was on whether additive manufacturing should be used within the Military, focusing on the utility of 3D printing and similar technologies in 21st century conflicts. Toby has not only excelled academically this year but also on the river having trialled for the Team GB rowing squad as well as rowing for Monkton Senior in the Henley Regatta.
Another standout achiever was Anna B, who achieved an impressive seven grade 9s and two grade 8s in her exams. Anna has been with Monkton since Nursery and gone through every stage of the school. She excelled across a diverse range of subjects earning top marks, amongst others, in Music, Biology, Chemistry and Art.
Jack Y, a Monkton academic scholar, got eight 9s and two 8s. He celebrated his GCSE success alongside his HPQ, where he received an A* getting full marks for his research into the use of armed drones in modern warfare.
Anna H, one of Monkton’s Music Scholars, achieved six 9s, three 8s and a 7. Anna has been fully involved in all of the school’s concerts and was a co-leader (with her father) in the New Year Ceilidh.
Grace G is from a Missionary family and joined Monkton Prep in Year 7. She excelled with four 9s, four 8s and a 7. She also achieved an A* for her HPQ on research into the most effective factors to reduce reoffending in Norwegian prisons.
This year at Monkton, all students that studied for the Higher Project Qualification gained A* grades - an outstanding result. Victoria Armand-Smith, Deputy Head of Academic, praised the opportunity Monkton offers; “The HPQ is a fantastic qualification, students learn research methods, time management skills and independence while taking a deep dive into a topic of their choice. The qualification is a perfect segue into the EPQ, and at the same time develops skills students can use in their A level studies, University and beyond.”
Principal at Monkton, Chris Wheeler, was full of praise for this year's cohort; “There have been some exceptional results this year but no statistics capture the individual stories of those who battled with Maths to reach the result they needed to study Psychology or the dyslexic who achieved the requirements for Theology in their English papers.” He added: “Behind all of the grades are a thousand and one stories and each one tells of courage, hard work and ambition.”
