Monkton Rugby has raised £632 for iThemba’s mentorship programme in Sweetwaters, South Africa, through a creative fundraising effort.

Supporters within the Monkton community pledged donations for every try the First XV scored throughout the season, contributing to a cause that empowers children in disadvantaged communities.

iThemba focuses on providing mentorship, education, and nutrition to children in underprivileged areas. The mentorship programme provides these children with positive role models from their communities, giving them the tools to succeed. The programme aims to equip people in communities with the skills and ideas they need in the long term.

Monkton Rugby’s efforts showcase the school’s values of service and humility. The team has directly supported iThemba’s mission to inspire young lives.

Ross Ashton, Monkton’s Head of Rugby and Cricket, said: “Our boys, particularly the leadership group, have been brilliant in first coming up with the idea to play for something more than just rugby and then following through by seeking ways to make an impact in the lives of others." He added, "I’d like to thank all who donated to this incredible cause and we look forward to building on the strong foundation and legacy this group of boys leave behind. Sport is so much more than simply playing for oneself, and the true power is seen in the example our boys set this season.”
