Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s
This year we took three teams to the annual Rosslyn Park National 7’s tournament.
On Monday 18th, our Boys 1st VII and Girls U16 Teams had an early start, setting off at 6:45am. It proved to be a brilliant day, with both teams being placed on the same pitches meaning they could all support each other throughout the day.
Our boys were placed in a very challenging group, starting well against Downside and eventually winning the game 33-10. The next challenge was The Perse School and, in a hard-fought, highly skillful game where both teams held the lead at different points, our opponents managed to edge us. Our final match against St John’s, Leatherhead was another incredible tussle into which our boys put their all, playing an outstanding brand of Rugby that ultimately saw us score some brilliant tries.
Significantly, we saw a Monkton Girls team take to the field for the first time ever at Rosslyn Park. The girls played incredibly well, winning their preliminary match against Salesian School 22-10, before being drafted into the Cup competition. Our pool opponents were Millfield and Oakham School, a tough task but the girls were up for the challenge. Millfield were up first and our team played fantastic rugby in the initial stages, holding onto the ball for an extended period of time, with the final score being 7-32 to Millfield. However, we saved our best for last as we took on Oakham in our final group match, scoring brilliant tries and defending bravely. Our final score ended 33-17 to the good, meaning we came away with 2 wins out of 3 at our first tournament!
On Wednesday 20th, it was the turn of our Boys U16 team who were drawn in a very tough group. We played some fantastic 7’s and showed skill and patience on the ball throughout each match. A real highlight for the boys was the opportunity to play our last match on the main pitch, including being live streamed on Youtube! They absolutely loved this experience and as coaches we are very excited to see them continue their progression into the Senior Rugby Programme next year.
