Children's Play, Learning & Development
BTEC Level 3 QCF Extended Certificate and Extended Diploma
These two courses are designed for students who have an interest in working with children and will be delivered at Monkton by lecturers from the world- renowned Norland College, home of the famous Norland Nannies.
The Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A level and provides a broad base of knowledge and skills for the Early Childhood sector, forming part of a programme of study including other courses e.g. A levels. The Extended Diploma is a two-year, full-time course, equivalent in size to 3 A levels, that meets entry requirements in its own right for those wanting to progress to employment in early years educator roles.
What do I need before starting this qualification?
No prior knowledge of the childcare sector is required. In order to practice as an Early Years Educator, Maths and English GCSE at A*-C grade must be achieved. An interest in the play, learning and development of young children is essential.
What will I learn?
Students will develop the required skills and knowledge to work within the early years sector; topics covered include children's development - keeping children safe, observation, assessment and planning, play and learning, reflective practice, supporting children's early learning, the Early Years Foundation stage and working with parents.
How is this course structured and assessed?
The Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A level and will run alongside other qualifications, such as A Levels. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels and is a full qualification in its own right.
Students will work in placements in early years setting as part of both courses. Within these qualifications there will be both internal and external assessment. Internal assessments are ongoing, with a balance between theory and practice. External assessments are the in form of examinations and research projects.
What degree courses and careers will this course by useful for?
The Extended Certificate is designed to work alongside other qualifications such as A levels to support progression to employment or Higher Education. It attracts UCAS points in the same way that A levels do - see the UCAS Tariff for further information.
The Extended Diploma carries UCAS points and is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example: BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS, BA (Hons) Special Education, BSC (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy.
Students who achieve this qualification may also apply to study at Norland College for the BA (Hons) Early Years Development and Learning and the Norland Diploma.
