Academic

A broad and varied curriculum

As Monkton's outstanding exam results over the last five years demonstrate - and, more importantly, what this means in terms in the way we add value to our pupils - fulfilling academic potential is one of our key priorities. Our students work hard and are well motivated, being supported and encouraged through the care and enthusiasm of our gifted teachers, who are committed to delivering lessons that are lively and enjoyable, as well as being rigorous and demanding. Strategies for supporting gifted and talented students are well established and they are continually updated and extended. There is also a dedicated centre which provides for individual students who need Learning Support or teaching in English as a Second Language.  For further details on all the subjects listed, please refer to Entering Year 10 and Entering the Sixth Form in the download section.

The fulfilment of academic potential is a key priority

Years 7 to 11

We aim to offer our students a broad curriculum in the lower year groups to enable them to keep options open for as long as possible, particularly for selection of subjects to GCSE. The curriculum reflects the spirit and fundamental goals of the National Curriculum in placing its focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and the Sciences while allowing wider options suited to individual need.  In addition to the core subjects, most students take four further GCSE's selected from a range of options.  Personal and Social Education, (which we call Personal Development), Physical Education and Religious Studies are included in the curriculum.  Decisions about the subjects an individual pupil should take are made only after extensive consultation with Tutors and parents.

The Sixth Form

Most students stay on for A levels.  Great care is taken by Tutors, Houseparents and other careers staff, with the help of Careers Aptitude Tests and in consultation with parents, in advising students over the choice of AS and A level subjects.  Twenty subjects are offered at A level.  In addition to their A level subjects, all students follow an enrichment programme which includes an AS Critical Thinking course as well as an exciting series of lectures given by some highly eminent speakers.
